Prostate Infections Infection of the prostate gland, known as bacterial prostatitis, can occur at any age. Acute bacterial infection is the most common form of prostate infection. While antibiotics provide prompt relief from the symptoms of the infection, as the medication cannot penetrate the deeper tissues of the prostate gland, bacteria hiding deep inside the prostate gland may survive despite treatment. Over time, the bacteria multiply, leading to recurrent prostate infection or chronic bacterial prostatitis.

Apart from antibiotic medications, anti-inflammatory pain relief medications are recommended for treating the symptoms of prostate infections. Acute and chronic prostate infections may also respond to certain herbal therapies.

Ways to Treat Prostate Infection

Antibiotics

All forms of prostate infections can be treated with appropriate antibiotic medicines. Usually doctors recommend intake of antibiotic medicines for two weeks to completely resolve the infection and minimize the risk of further infections. Although the symptoms of infections subside within a few days after taking the drug, remember to complete the full course of the medication to diminish the risk of recurrent infections.

Antibiotics

In case of chronic prostate infection, the antibiotic drug should be taken for a longer time, usually for four to twelve weeks. Often bacteria responsible for the infection may develop resistance to the antibiotic drug that was used for treating an acute or chronic infection. When an antibiotic loses its effectiveness in treating the prostate infection, changing the antibiotic helps to treat chronic infection.

Anti-inflammatory Medicine

Non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs may be used for reducing pain and swelling of the prostate gland. However, in most cases, the inflammation and pain subside naturally following treatment with antibiotics.

Sitz Bath

Sitz Bath

The discomfort caused by prostate infection can be reduced by taking a stiz bath. To take a stiz bath, immerse the lower part of your body in a bathtub filled with warm water. You may add salt, vinegar or baking soda to the water.

Surgery

In case of severe chronic prostate infection that does not respond to antibiotic treatment, removing the infected prostate tissues through surgical procedure can provide relief from the bothersome infection. Surgery is especially recommended when the swollen prostate gland obstructs urine flow, aggravating the symptoms of prostatitis.

Herbs

Symptoms of prostate infection can be treated with the herb tribulus terrestris. In the traditional medicine systems of India and China, tribulus terrestris is used for treating inflammation of the prostate gland and improving prostate function.

Painful urination is a common symptom of prostate infection. The diuretic effect of stinging nettle helps to ease urination. Moreover, the anti-inflammatory components in the herb help to reduce the inflammation and pain of the prostate gland.

Shilajit

In Ayurveda, Shilajit is recommended for treating prostate infection. It is a mineral rich tar-like substance extracted from the rocks of the Himalayas and Caucasus Mountains. By strengthening the immune system, it supports rapid healing. Moreover, Shilajit is a powerful anti-inflammatory substance. It helps to reduce inflammation and pain. Sexual problems caused by bacterial prostatitis can be alleviated with the help of Shilajit.

The anti-inflammatory property of chamomile can provide relief from inflammation and pain of the prostate gland caused by bacterial infection. Buchu, a plant indigenous to Africa, contains antiseptic components that help to kill the infection-causing bacteria living in the tissues of the prostate gland.
