A sore throat can be very trying to endure especially since it is not a serious enough condition to visit a doctor. Also, if you are prone to throat infections, it can occur very frequently. Thankfully, since it is a minor ailment, it can easily be fixed in the comfort of your home. Constantly drinking cough syrups, sucking on lozenges and taking over the counter anti-histamines can be harmful in the long run.
The best way to cure a sore throat is to use some tried and true home remedies. Here are some of the most effective concoctions and natural treatments that can effectively deal with a sore throat condition.
Natural Ways to Cure a Sore Throat
Warm Honey and Dry Ginger Concoction
Pour a tumbler full of water in a saucepan and bring to boil. Add a 1 inch piece of dried ginger root to the boiling water. Allow it to boil for 3-4 minutes. You will notice that the water changes color. Don’t boil the mixture for too long. Just simmer for 2-3 minutes till you get the aroma of ginger. Strain this mixture into a glass and add 2 teaspoons of honey.
Honey is a well known ingredient in cough syrups and lozenges and is extensively used in Ayurveda for treating various ailments, thanks to its antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Dried ginger root has less juice than fresh ginger but is ideal for relieving throat infections. While many advocate the use of honey and lemon as an effective home remedy for sore throats, many medical practitioners advise patients to refrain from consuming citric fruits since the sour juices can actually aggravate the condition.
Black Pepper and Coriander Seed Concoction
Boil a glass of water, add 1 teaspoon of whole black pepper and allow it to boil for 2-3 minutes. Next, add 1/4 teaspoon of coriander seeds to the mixture. Allow it to boil for 1-2 minutes. Strain the mixture into a bowl. Drink half the concoction in the morning and the rest before bedtime to get relief from your sore throat.
Black pepper has anti-inflammatory and carminative properties and has been frequently used in Unani medicine. Coriander seeds are known to be cooling and serve to balance the heat of the black pepper. Drink this concoction as is or if you cannot bear the taste, sweeten with a teaspoon of honey.
Salt Water Gargle
If you feel a sore throat coming on, nip it in the bud with a salt water gargle. While some recommend sea salt and other specific kinds of salt, ordinary kitchen salt will work just fine. Heat water in a saucepan and add a teaspoon of salt to it. Once the salt dissolves, pour it into a glass, wait for the water to turn warm and then gargle. Do this twice a day to rid the throat of the infection. Since a sore throat is an inflammation of the throat, saline gargling reduces this inflammation and gives relief to the burning sensation in the throat. This remedy is not meant to be ingested; gargle and spit out the water.
