This article is for those women who do not want to use prescribed medicines to treat their fibroid tumor problems but would like to depend on herbs to prevent those odd hour emergency room visits. However, with herbs the golden rules are – not to get dependent on any one herbal remedy for a very long period of time, and also to remain patient since herbs do not work wonders over a very short period of time too.
Most herbs may work in some women and may not in some others. The following list of herbs has been prepared based on suggestions from women who suffered from fibroid tumor growth problems.
Herbal Remedies for Treating Fibroid Tumors
Chasteberry is commonly known as Vitex, and is officially known as Vitex agnus-castus. The herb has beautiful lavender colored flowers but is popular for its berries and leaves. Chasteberry is considered an effective herbal tonic for both men and women, especially for their reproductive system. Chasteberry contains the following components – Flavonoids, steroidal hormone, vitexin, diterpenoids, alkaloids and casticin. The herb is now used by women to treat abnormal uterine bleeding and fibroid tumor problems. Chasteberry is also used for addressing the following problems – premenstrual stress syndrome, increased lactation, luteal phase defect and cyclical breast pain.
The herb works by changing the levels of prolactin secretion due to dopaminergic effects in the body. The Prolactin levels in the female body directly influences the following hormones– Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and estrogen. According to others, the chemicals present in the herb also affect the working of the pituitary gland in the body.
To control and shrink fibroids, Chasteberry tincture or decoction can be used. Some recommend taking about thirty drops of the tincture 3-4 times per day. In the market, Chasteberry capsules and tablets are also available. However, Chasteberry should be avoided by pregnant women as it may lead to complications.
Castor Oil Plant
The herb is scientifically known as Ricinus Communis, and the oil derived from the plant seeds can be effectively used (externally) to reduce uterine fibroid growth.
It is claimed that castor oil can be applied to the affected area to stimulate lymph drainage. Warm castor oil compress can be applied with a heating pad/hot water bottle to the lower abdomen area for atleast 30 minutes to stimulate absorption. Castor oil also helps in treating problems related to breast cysts.
Dandelion is scientifically known as Taraxacum Officinale, and is a popular herbal medicine used by Native Americans and in Chinese Medicine. One of the important reasons for the occurrence of fibroid tumors in some women is the abundance of estrogen hormone in their body. To grow and to re-occur fibroid tumors requires an estrogen dominant environment.
The organ in the body that deals in metabolizing this excess estrogen is none other than the liver. Therefore, to treat fibroid it is important to remove excess estrogen from the body. Many herbs can be used to detoxify the liver and Dandelion is a leading name. Dandelion is also used to detoxify the gallbladder and also helps to reduce liver ailments.
Herbalists recommend combining Dandelion with milk thistle and yellow dock for better results. Also, for cleansing the liver an effective herbal tea would include the following – Dandelion roots, Yellow Dock, Nettle leaves, Burdock root and Red clover.
Another herb with chemicals that can affect the hormonal levels in the body is the Stinging Nettle. Stinging nettle was previously associated with the following ailments – joint pain, urinary problems and enlarged prostate.
However, now it is also used to reduce estrogen dominance in some women. Nettle leaves and root extracts are available in the market in the following forms – tea and capsules. At home, one can soak nettle leaves in water in the ratio of 1:10 and drink the juice three times a day. Similarly, nettle roots can be boiled in water and the resulting infusion can be taken three times a day. However, Nettle is more effective when it is combined with other herbs.
The fruits and leaves of red raspberry have been used as an herbal medicine since ages. Raspberry leaves are used by women to treat the following issues related to their health – heavy periods, painful labor and also to prevent morning sickness during pregnancy. However, the use of Red raspberry leaves for reducing bleeding due to fibroids is getting popular these days. Many women use red raspberry leaf tea 2-3 times per day to reduce fibroid related pain and bleeding.
Red Clover flowers
A controversial yet popular herb used for the treatment of fibroid tumor is the Red Clover. Red Clover is scientifically known as Trifolium pretense. The herb is controversial as it works totally against the principle mentioned in the case of Dandelion for the treatment of uterine fibroid. It was earlier stated in this article that estrogen dominance is considered the numero uno reason for fibroid growth. And to reduce or shrink fibroid, the estrogen level in the body has to be reduced. However, Red clover is an herb that mimics the role of estrogen in the body and it contains a group of important chemicals known as isoflavones.
According to herbalists, high amounts of isoflavones in the body can reduce fibroid growth. Birth control pills are a popular example in this case. Birth control pills have estrogen and they are still prescribed by doctors to treat uterine fibroid in women. However, science says that the use of Red Clover may infact exacerbate the condition in many women suffering from uterine fibroid.
Yet another herb that is termed controversial for the treatment of fibroid tumor in women is Dong Quai. The herb Dong Quai is mostly found in China, Japan and Korea. The herb has been used in ancient medicines to treat female problems such as irregular periods, painful periods and premenstrual syndrome.
The herb also is used by some herbalists to treat uterine fibroid tumors. Similar to Red Clover, Dong Quai also has estrogen like chemicals and follows the mechanism of action of birth control pills. However, some say that Dong Quai helps in reducing fibroid tumors by cleansing the liver. As per science, any herb that contains estrogen like chemicals may be harmful for uterine fibroid and other hormonal conditions in women.
Other herbs that have been used by women to treat their fibroid tumors include – Black Cohosh, Milk Thistle, Motherwort, Goldenseal, Taheebo, Wild Yam root, Cayenne Pepper, Ginger roots etc. Many also use the essential oil derived from Roman Chamomile, Lavender and Cypress to treat their fibroid tumor problems. The oil derived from these herbs should be applied externally on the lower abdomen area several times per day.
